Although the weather is quickly turning colder here in the northeast, I'm not ready to give in to mother nature. However, although there may still be a few weeks of golf left in the season, now is a good time to get prepared for winter practice. Below are a few suggested practice aids for the winter. Using them correctly and regularly through the winter can only help to start next season on a positive.
- Practice Putting Cup
Winter months are a great time to perfect that putting stroke. So, I use "The Perfect Practice Putting Cup" from No Bogey. I can simply throw it down anywhere on the carpet and hit putts from any direction. And, due to it's design, it forces you to learn how to hit the perfect putt.
- PVC Pipe
Let's face it. If you want to play well, you need to develop a repeatable swing. The best possible drill to use to feel and learn Moe Norman's backswing, vertical drop, and impact position is the PVC Drill. I have helped many fellow golfers by having them go to their local hardware store to buy a 5 foot length of pipe for two dollars. For details, visit PVC Drill.
- Leverage Bag
The leverage bag is an important tool to learn how to correctly produce speed and develop feel of the ideal impact position. The bag is designed primarily to work on three areas – leverage angles through impact (key to consistency and distance in your swing), facing the ball at impact (one of key fundamentals to consistent ball striking), and working on getting a square club face at impact.
- Point 3 almostGOLF Balls
Rather than spend the time and money traveling to the nearest driving range, I have turned my yard (2 acres) into a driving range by utilizing limited flight balls from Almost Golf. I have found the balls to have real ball flight and performance while safely traveling one third the distance. This winter I will bring them inside to practice chipping.
- Practice Matt and Metal Bucket
For chipping practice. The practice matt is so I don't wear the carpet out and create tension with my lovely wife. The metal bucket is to receive aural reinforcement each time the ball hits the target.
- Alignment Aid
When performing the PVC Drill or practicing with the Leverage Bag, I also want to practice the proper setup to the ball and commit it to muscle memory. For this, simply buy a couple of yardsticks from the hardware store. By properly marking them for each club and then crisscrossing, the yardsticks will assure your feet are at the proper width and distance from the ball and the ball is in the proper position to the body.
